That, which is outwardly lost, must be inwardly won

When things go wrong it feels instinctive to retreat home, to that which feels familiar.

In the mid nineteenth century things were going wrong for Denmark, with over a third of its territories lost though battle, a new source of national pride was needed. Thus, 3,000 square miles of barren heath in Western Jutland was transformed with green forests and cultivatable lush land, artificial meadows, complex irrigation and extensive shelterbelts. This same land is now earmarked for re-wilding. The land will be managed back to a vision of its original state, in the name of nature and biodiversity. Those once heralded as saving the nation are now seen to be the enemy of the land and that, which is "Danish".
